“Holy Spirit, I have no idea where I would find a fried chicken restaurant, but You know right where one is. Please lead me to it.”
I grew up in the south. What can I say? At every church social the meat of choice was fried chicken. I love fried chicken, especially crispy fried chicken wings.
Through the years I continued to experiment with following God. Sometimes it worked… sometimes it didn’t. But I was learning as I went.
One night, when we lived in the Boston area, I had driven to Rhode Island to give a presentation. When it was time for me to return home I asked if anyone knew of a place where I could get some fried chicken. No one could tell me of such a place, but I wasn’t surprised. I was really off the beaten path, and southern cooking is fairly rare in New England.
I resolved to make the 2 hour drive home without eating, but the thought of fried chicken just wouldn’t leave. Finally I said, “Holy Spirit, I have no idea where I would find a fried chicken restaurant, but You know right where one is. Please lead me to it.” I then began to pray quietly in tongues to be more sensitive to His leading.
As I came into Fall River on the Interstate highway I had an urge to take a particular exit near the downtown area of the city. I got to the end of the exit ramp and felt impressed to turn left. After a few blocks I felt I should turn left again. There was nothing in this area of town that would have given me any indication that there were any restaurants, let alone any that were open that time of night.
Soon I felt I should turn right. Things were looking pretty barren. After a few blocks I had an urge to turn left again… then one more block and another left turn… then half a block and there was a fried chicken restaurant on the left side of the street.
I had been to Fall River a couple of times… in the daylight… and never in that section of the city. There was no way I could have ever figured this one out on my own. And as popular as fried chicken is in that part of the country this restaurant may have been the only one of its kind for miles around.
Lesson learned…
God knows where the supply is. God knows how to get you to where you need to go. Practice following His leading, and when the need is important you’ll be miles ahead of the rest of the pack.
What do you think? Can you do this? What will you practice on?
“For the earnest expectation of the [creation] waits for the manifestation of the sons of God.” – Romans 8:19
God is the same God He was in the New Testament, and will guide men and women today as He did in the past.
“There are many voices in the world, and none of them is without significance.” – Paul
One mistake some make… They want so badly to be led by the Spirit that they try too hard… and end up wrong.
Many try to hear God with their physical ears. It doesn’t work that way.
He then laid hands on her, prayed for her to receive her sight, and sure enough… she saw…
He showed me exactly what to do, and how to hold her ears.
A few months after her miracle she was informed of a pre-cancerous condition in one of her ears…
At the core of relationship is communication.
In your learning experiences you’ll miss His leading. Don’t worry about it… He has it covered.
Don’t be afraid to practice. You have to practice if you want to become proficient at anything.
“Holy Spirit, I have no idea where I would find a fried chicken restaurant, but You know right where one is. Please lead me to it.”
You really don’t have to know HOW to seek God. Just be determined to get the answer you need.
A spectacular leading of the Spirit may not be what you REALLY want.
In all my “works” I found I could produce no eternal value, but in “returning and rest” He was able to speak to me and lead me for His eternal purpose.
