His Leading When It Matters

You really don’t have to know HOW to seek God. Just be determined to get the answer you need.

When I was a new Christian I got engaged to the woman who had led me to the Lord. After a year and a half, and no solid movement toward setting a wedding date, I had an experience that caused me to sit up and take notice. Suddenly, because of that experience, I realized I had never asked God if this marriage was the right thing for me.

There I was, minding my own business, in love, with my life planned out ahead of me… It was sobering to think I might not be doing the right thing, but I suddenly needed to find out.

I really didn’t know much about hearing God’s voice. I’d read books… I’d heard ministers talk about it… but I hadn’t ever purposely sought for an answer from God for a specific situation. In other words, I really didn’t know what I was doing, but I knew that I needed to know. I had already been through one divorce, and I didn’t want to go through another one. I wanted my next marriage to count.

My job at that time required a lot of driving, and the car had become my private prayer closet. Over the next few days I prayed more miles than I had ever prayed before. I prayed in tongues, and prayed in tongues, and prayed some more in tongues. At times I would weep as I drove down the highway. When it was time to work I put myself into the task at hand, but when I was driving I turned to God to find out what He thought was best for me.

At night, when I sat in my living room, I poured through the book of Proverbs. From time to time I might follow a scripture reference to another part of the Bible, but I stayed primarily in Proverbs. During the day, when driving, I would pray.

Like I said, I really didn’t know what I was doing. I just knew (based on what others said) that it could be done, and I was determined to get my answer. Sometimes I wondered if I would ever get what I was asking for, but then it happened on the 10th or 11th day.

I can take you back to the very road I was on… and I could show you (within a half mile) where it happened. That was how real it was. All of a sudden, during my praying, the peace of God just dropped inside of me… and I KNEW… I knew what I had to do. There was no question about it… I had to break off the relationship.

In more recent years I’ve found that the “God kind of faith” is a “knowing”… an “assurance”… a place of peace where you just KNOW. You really can’t explain it to someone who’s never experienced it… but you’re absolutely SURE of the answer, and you’ll always be able to point back to that place where things changed from uncertainty to certainty.

Though it was hard to do I broke the engagement. About a year later I was sitting with another young woman on a park bench when a very similar thing happened to me… All of a sudden that same assurance and peace dropped in me, only this time it was the assurance that this one was the right person to marry. And she was… and we’ve been married over 28 years.

Why was the first one not right, but the second one was? I don’t have all the answers, but I can certainly trust the One who DOES have the answers. The woman he led me to has stuck with me through some very difficult times, and we are stronger now than we’ve ever been. We complete each other… we compliment each other… and together we have become a strong life team.

You really don’t have to know HOW to seek God. Just be determined to get the answer you need, for He IS a rewarder of those who DILIGENTLY seek Him.

What answer do YOU need from God? Are you willing to press in to Him until you get it?
